Es gibt Tage, da macht mir meine Arbeit einfach richtig Spaß! Gestern habe ich bei einem sehr angenehmen Kunden den Acoustical Systems Aquilar Tonarm in der Ausführung Anniversary mit dem Acoustical Systems Palladian XO installiert.

Ich hatte ja scon das „normale“ Palladian hatte ich ja hier ausprobiert und es hatte mir ja sehr gut gefallen.

Die XO Version hat einen anderen Diamanten und statt einem Aluminium einen Bor-Nadelträger. Ich hatte mich ja schon auf der High End 2023 ausführlich mit Herrn Brakemeier – dem Entwickler – über dieses System unterhalten…Das hatte schon meine Neugier und positive Erwartungen in mir geweckt.
Den Tonarm kannte ich ja schon und wusste, was er kann.
Die Installation lief so was von angenehm und unkompliziert, wie ich es schon lange nicht mehr erlebt habe. Zuerst wurde in den Tonarmbasis-Ring des TechDas eine extra gefertigte Titanplatte eingeschraubt. Technisch natürlich viel besser als das Original Holzbrettchen, welches natürlich schwingungsanfällig ist!
Beim Tonarm wurde sehr, sehr viel richtig gemacht – auch Dinge, die man vielleicht nicht auf Anhieb sieht…Die Fertigungsqualität ist einfach Top! Besonders gut haben mir die Lager gefallen – extrem reibungsarm und spielfrei. Wenn man den Tonarm auf 0g Auflagekraft einstellt merkt man das sofort. Aus meiner Sicht einer der besten kommerziell erhältlichen Tonarme.
Schon beim Montieren des Palladian XO hatte ich das erste Lächeln im Gesicht: Richtig gute Kontakte zum Anschluss des Tonabnehmers – passt, erzeugt den richtigen Kontaktdruck und wackelt nicht. Da hab ich schon viel Schlimmeres erlebt! Vorher war ein Tonabnehmer und Tonarm eines anderen Herstellers montiert – ein für mich typisches „me too“ Produkt (Wenn Vinyl boomt bauen wir halt auch…) Da gab es z.B. Kontakte für den Tonabnehmer, die einfach nicht passten und aufgebohrt werden müssten(!).
Der ganze mechanische Einbau, Einstellen der Geometrie und Auflagekraft gingen sehr flüssig und angenehm vor sich.
Dann kam das, was normalerweise die Hauptarbeit ist: Die messtechnische Einstellung vom Tonabnehmer: Ich optimiere auf Kanaltrennung, Verzerrungen (THD und Intermodulation) Tracklability und Wiederholgenauigkeit. So etwas kann auch durchaus ein paar Stunden dauern, wenn man immer wieder einzelne Parameter, die sich natürlich alle gegenseitig beeinflussen, mehrfach nachstellen muss. Wie üblich fing ich damit an: Tonarmrohr genau parallel zur Plattenoberfläche, Azimut genau senkrecht. Und die meisten Werte stimmten in sehr guter Form auf Anhieb! Mein Grinsen wurde breiter! Ich musste nur die Auflagekraft und den Zenit-Winkel genau einstellen. Die messtechnischen Ergebnisse waren innerhalb sehr kurzer Zeit ausgezeichnet. Auch die Serienkonstanz muss ich lobend erwähnen: Ich hatte ja mit den Werten von dem hier getesteten Palladian begonnen das XO verhielt sich praktisch gleich!
Das System war natürlich den Temperaturschwankungen und Vibrationen vom Transport ausgesetzt und nicht eingespielt. Ich kenne die Kundenanlage ja schon gut, da ich sie seit Jahren betreue. Die klangliche Steigerung – selbst mit dem nicht eingespielten System – war unerwartet groß und beeindruckend! In ca. einer Woche fahre ich noch mal hin – Feinabgleich, wenn das System eingespielt ist. Da weis ich was noch im positiven Sinne kommen wird! Wie zu erwarten legte das XO was Feinauflösung und Dynamik angeht im Vergleich zum Palladian noch mal deutlich zu, ohne Einbussen bei den anderen Vorzügen.
Michael Fremer/Stereophile schrieb mal zu dem ebenfalls sehr guten Audio Tehnica Art 1000 (habe ich auch, kommt aber nicht an das Palladian ran) : „If You can afford it – buy it“
So kann ich diese Kombination aus Tonarm und Tonabnehmer auch empfehlen!!!
There are days when I really enjoy my work! Yesterday I installed the Acoustical Systems Aquilar tonearm in the Anniversary version with the Acoustical Systems Palladian XO for a very pleasant customer. I tried the “normal” Palladian here and I really liked it. The XO version has a different diamond and a boron cantilever instead of aluminum. I had already talked in detail with Mr. Brakemeier – the designer- about this system at High End 2023… That had already aroused my curiosity and positive expectations in me. I already knew the tonearm and what it could do. The installation was so pleasant and uncomplicated that I haven’t experienced it in a long time. First, a specially manufactured titanium plate was bolted to the tonearm base ring of the TechDas. Technically, of course, much better than the original wooden board, which is of course susceptible to vibration! A lot has been done right with the tonearm – even things that you might not see right away…The manufacturing quality is simply top! I particularly liked the bearings – extremely low friction and play-free. If you set the tonearm to 0g tracking force you will notice this immediately. In my opinion one of the best commercially available tonearms. As soon as I mounted the Palladian I’d a smile in my face: Very good clips for connecting the cartridge, sitting tight without any slack. There I´ve experienced much worse! Previously, a pickup and tonearm from another manufacturer had been installed – a typical „me too“ product for me (when vinyl is booming, we build too…) There were, for example, contacts for the pickup that simply didn’t fit and had to be drilled out(!) .
The entire mechanical installation, setting the geometry and tracking force went very smoothly and pleasantly. Then came what is usually the main work: the measurement adjustment of the pickup: I optimize for channel separation, distortion (THD and intermodulation), trackability and repeatability. Something like this can take a few hours if you have to repeatedly adjust individual parameters, which of course all influence each other. As usual, I started with this: tonearm tube exactly parallel to the record surface, azimuth exactly perpendicular. And most of the values were correct straight away! My grin grew wider! I just had to adjust the tracking force and the zenith angle precisely. The measurement results were excellent within a very short time. I also have to praise the series consistency: I started with the values of the Palladian tested here and the XO behaved practically the same! The system was of course exposed to temperature fluctuations and vibrations from transport and had not the necessary run in time. I already know the customer´s system well because I have been working on it for years. The increase in sound – even with the system not being run in – was unexpectedly large and impressive! I’ll be going there again in about a week for fine-tuning once the system is up and running. Then I know what is to come in a positive sense! Michael Fremer/Stereophile once wrote about the also very good Audio Tehnica Art 1000 (I also have it, but it can’t match the Palladian): “If you can afford it – buy it” So I can also recommend this combination of tonearm and cartridge!!!
